Forward Ho........

Since I can't go back I guess the only direction is Forward - on to bigger and better chalanges. A friend of mine sends me inspernational notes every week. After all that frustration( trying to access an old blogging page) from yesterday this weeks note made a lot of sence.
CHASING THE PAST

After whom are you pursuing? After a dead dog, after a single flea? ( 1 Samuel 24:14b )

A certain elderly pooch had been left with a neighbor while its rightful owner was away on holidays. The shock of bording out provided to be too much for the old dog's constitution, and the women told me she got up one morning and found him dead under the kitchen table.

In a big city, giving away a live dog is difficult enough, but whatever would she do with a canine carcass? After numerous phone calls and several futile attempts to dispose of it, her only recourse seemed to be the local humane society. They agreed to arrange a burial if she would bring the remains to their headquarters.

Since the woman had to go there by bus, transporting the body posed something of a problem. After considering the various alternatives, she decided to put the expired dog in an old suitcace and simply carry him to his final resting place, while still maintaining a maximum degree of dignity.

Halfway to her destination, she had to change busses, and some fellow very graciously offered to cary her piece of luggage. He murmured something about it being a dead weight, and when she refused to divulge the contents, he must have concluded she was smuggling gold. At ant rate, she borded the next bus and looked back just in time to see the culprit absconding down a back ally with the suitcase. Her first impulse was to give chase; but then, like David of old, she was struck by the absurdity of the situation. Chasing a dead dog, of all things! With that, she settled back to enjoy the ride home, mission accomplished.

In the spirital sence, the Lord expects us to do the same, yet we sometimes insist on chasing down " back alleys" in a vain attempt to recapture part of the past, robbed from us by time.

The former beauty quean, for instance, looks in a mirror, searching for the points that helped her win the contest many years before.

The businessman tries to retrace his decisions, hoping to expand his company in a different direction this time around.

The athlete of bygone days works out against the clock and dreams of recapturing the title jogging his memory.

A mother looks upon her growing children with dismay, and her maternal arms ache with emptiness.

As dificult as it is to accept, all the past is history. Any efforts toward actually reliving certain periods of our lives are but absurd attempts to regain what is gone forever. Such efforts would be a worthless pursuit of time, energy, and money. In contrast, the Christian faith enables usto learn from the past, apply it to the present, and hope for the future. Instead of chasing dead dogs down dark allies, our walk should illustrate -

Proverbs 4:18 " But the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn, that shines brighter and brighter untill the full day."

If we can't - shoulden't look back - then how about looking forward to good ideas - every day. www.insightoftheday.com
